I don’t know how the recall elections will turn out in Wisconsin. So far, from what I’ve read, real Democratic candidates (i.e. those who stand somewhere in the left of the spectrum) have beaten fake Democratic candidates (i.e. people recruited and supported by Republicans to act as spoilers) in primaries, which I hope bodes well for the general election on August 9th. For Democrats, I should clarify. I hope it bodes well for real Democrats.
I don’t know how easy it is to trigger a recall election in Wisconsin. It looks like the state is among the minority as far as having a mechanism apart from impeachment; in Texas, we’re screwed as far as having recall as a remedy.
I do know, however, that it is hard to get voters to give a good goddamn about anything, so the fact that Wisconsin has managed to wind up with 8 recall elections this summer seems inspiring or terrifying, depending upon which side you are on and which side wins.
What whipped Wisco up was a union issue that hit the pocketbooks of some core Democratic constituencies. They sustained massive protests and leveraged that momentum for these recall elections. Impressive.
What’s in the water up there, and can we bottle it for national distribution? Because the game of chicken going on in DC right now, that’s going to hit the pocketbooks of more than union members, is scaring the bejeezus out of me, and I want to know what the plan is so we wake up on August 3rd wondering how to stay cool instead of wondering whether it’s too late to re-stock our Y2K emergency supply kits.
Also, god, please, can somebody who loves him and cares about him hire someone to kidnap and deprogram John Boehner?
