Mmmmmmm … Cabrito

Well, I haven’t hit the lottery numbers yet (dollar & a dream, baby!), but I did win a contest to help feed the African wild dogs, a.k.a. painted dogs at the Houston Zoo.

The great cabrito caper happens tonight. I’ll hit the zoo and meet up with the Curator of Carnivores, which is quite possibly the best job title ever. After we feed the dogs, we’ll enjoy a lecture featuring wildlife conservation biologist Dr. Greg Rasmussen, who lives in Zimbabwe and runs Painted Dog Conservation.

We’ll be doing something a little like this:

I totally get that dogs, wild or not, like a little challenge with their meal. The Ferocious Opossum Slayer, Queen Lulu the Terrible, never takes a true interest in the food in her bowl. But put it inside a ball …

She bats it around for a bit, getting it into position.

She chomps on some chow.

Then, she just keeps an eye on it. Judge doesn’t even try to get in on the action. Lulu holds down the alpha role quite well. Notice that she’s also positioned herself to be nearly on top of the preferred chew toy of the moment, the antler. Judge has no chance.

I am quite sure, given her fondness for salmon and eggs, that she’d find cabrito to be delicious as well. I am also quite sure that we won’t take to hanging goat carcasses in our backyard any time soon.

I’m jealous you get to do this!

It was fun. I would never accept an invitation to feed the cobra. African painted dogs up close, no problem. Cobras? Following on Twitter is about as close as I want to get.
