Maybe I Should Scream Sexism Now?

Although to do so would seem to be playing into your hands, Dave Andrews, a.k.a. MrBigShot.

Thanks so much, by the way, for the constructive feedback on my post about the racist joke on last night’s NewsFix. Dave’s comment on my post, quoted in its entirety:

Get the fuck over yourself. Not everything in your sheltered life is racist. It was a joke. You debate on whether it was a good joke or not, but to scream racism makes you look like a little bitch.

It is true. Not everything in my sheltered life is racist. Thank goodness. But every once in a while, I run across it, often in places I don’t expect to see, hear, or read it.

I’m quite comfortable standing by my assertion that following up a story about the demographic weight of the Han Chinese relative to the rest of the world’s population with a comment about Chinese food delivery reflects a certain lack of sensitivity that one might even label racism. It may have been intended as a joke. That doesn’t make it any less offensive.

[By the way, I’m not actually screaming sexism, Dave, so calm down. I’ll let you know when I do.]

  1. Wow. Dave’s just a wee bit sensitive, isn’t he?
