You can read my original post on the Tebow Superbowl ad here. A few thoughts I’d like to add:
ONE, I think Amanda Marcotte at Pandagon pegged it. Focus on the Family set up a win-win – either CBS refuses the ad, which earns them mad publicity and tees up a great fundraising campaign, or CBS broadcasts it, which not only means it reaches a huge audience, but that nuts like me will spend way too much time helping to publicize it.
TWO, again agreeing with others, feminist groups should not oppose the airing of the ad. Such groups should instead buy an ad to run during the game that points out that Pam Tebow opposes giving other women the same choice she claimed to have. That sets up a win-win for us – either CBS refuses the pro-choice ad, which earns us mad publicity and tees up a great fundraising campaign, or CBS broadcasts it, which not only means it reaches a huge audience, but that nuts who are my evil opposites will spend way too much time helping to publicize it.
THREE, little lesson on the difference between being illegal and unavailable. Much has been made about whether Pam Tebow really made a choice, since abortion was illegal in the Philippines when she lived there as a missionary. With the right connections and a little bit of money, no matter what the law says, women can pretty much get abortions if they need them.
Thailand? Australia? Hawaii? Her own doctor’s office after hours? Had she been determined, she could have made it happen. Don’t take my word for it. Google Dr. Robert Spencer of Ashland, Pennsylvania. He was by no means the only one. Trust me, Pam Tebow made a choice.
FOUR, if CBS refused to air a pro-choice ad after accepting the anti-choice Tebow one, we could go after them not only for wingnuttery, but for being anti-capitalist.That might force Focus on the Family to pull their ad, because otherwise, they’d practically be funding the socialist vanguard, and if I know my godbags, the one thing they hate more than women who have control over their own reproductive system is socialists. And the devil and sin and all that. But mostly pro-choice women and socialists.
